2024 PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Primary Sport Wellington made the difficult decision and will no longer be supporting zone or organising the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet moving forward.

The decision was made based on feedback received from teachers at the respective PSW Zone Sports Meeting regarding increased costs and difficulty experienced associated with booking pool time and swim instructors, increased bus charges and increased compliance to hold swim meets in WCC facilities, incresed difficulty sourcing the number of volunteers required to run the swim meets safely.  64% of the PSW TIC Sports voted to remove swimming from the PSW events calendar.

In addition to the above the number of students attending the PSW Inter Zone Swim meet compared to the number of students competing in PSW Inter Zone Cross Country and Athletics meets AND the costs associated with supporting 6 Zone swim meets and the PSW Swim meet did not justify the continuation of these swim meets moving forward.  Important to NB the costs for the 7 swim meets represented over 50% of the funding received from the Lion Foundation to cover all costs associated with ALL Zone Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics events.

The PSW Governance Group accepted the recommendation from the Director of Sport at the end of 2023.

Please NB PSW has met with representatives from Swim Wellington and EasySwim and these organisations will be trying to keep swimming on the calendar for the membership in 2024 and beyond.

ALL races are TIMED FINALS.

An officials briefing will be conducted at 9:30am.  It is essential that ALL timekeepers and other officials report at this time.  First race is expected to commence at 9:50am.

IMPORTANT to NB schools with 10 or more students competing at the PSW Inter Zone Swim meet are expected to provide a volunteer to assist with the smooth running of this swim meet.  Failure to have the roles filled will leave me with no choice but to cancel the event.  Being able to comply with WCC regulations, ensure the safety of ALL participants and offer a quality sporting experience is at the forefront of decisions.

The programme will commence at 9:30am with an Official’s briefing.  With the first races to commence at approximately 9:50am and conclude at approximately 2pm.

Events on offer: Year 4 – 8 Boys and Girls

50m Freestyle

25m Backstroke

25m Breaststroke

25m Butterfly

25m Freestyle

4 x 25m Relays

Monster Relay:  10 x 25m Relay

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • All schools with 10 or more students participating are expected to provide an official to assist with the smooth running of the PSW Inter Zone Swim Champs.
  • Swimmers need to listen for their race and report to the designated marshalling area when announced.
  • Each Zone is able to field 3 swimmers per event.  Should a 4th swimmer from any zone report for marshalling, the swimmers registered on the marshalling sheet will be permitted to race and the 4th swimmer to return to the grandstand..
  • Replacement swimmers can be made on the day, due to sickness.
  • It is essential that the children know which zone their school is in and which Zone they are representing i.e. either Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern, Tawa or Western.
  • Car parking:  Important to NB 180 minute time limit restriction if you choose to park in one of the three car parking areas at WRAC.  If you are staying for the duration of the PSW Inter Zone Swim meet you may wish to park your vehicle on one of the surrounding streets that have NO parking restrictions.
  • It is the driver’s responsibility to follow any parking restrictions such as: Not exceeding any advised time limits, not parking in residential areas, not parking on grass burns, not parking on tree roots or stumps, not parking within a metre of a driveway or parking in disabled car parks (includes picking up and dropping off passengers).

Primary Sport Wellington would like to thank and acknowledge the generous grant received from the Lion Foundation to support the equipment hire and pool hire for 18 Zone progression events and 3 Inter Zone events.  Without this funding the costs of being able to support and organise these events would have to be passed onto the PSW membership making it unaffordable to offer these progression events.

Primary Sport Wellington would also like to thank and acknowledge the support provided by Todd Morten, Easyswim Swim School for the expertise and guidance provided with school, zone and the inter zone swim meets.

2022 PSW Inter Zone Swimming Championships

Thank you to everyone who swam and assisted with the smooth running of the 2022 PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet.  It was the first time we were able to offer a PSW Inter Zone Swim meet since 2019, due to not being able to comply with the COVID restrictions and measures in place at the time.

This year there were a number of changes that had to be implemented due to Central and Tawa Zones deciding to follow Eastern, Northern and Western Zones to no longer offer NON Champ races at their respective Zone Swim meets.  This meant that it was no longer viable to offer any NON Champ races at the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet.

However I was able to offer the top 3 swimmers from each zone the opportunity to race.

Unfortunately I had underestimated the amount of time that the extra heats required and we ran over our booked time by 35mins.  This resulted in the cancellation of the Monster Relay Race and for this, I apologise, as the Monster Relay is always an exciting relay to finish the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet.

I would like to acknowledge the following for the support that they provided to ensure the event ran smoothly:

Todd Morten, Easy Swim:  Todd, attended and supported ALL 7 PSW Swim meets providing specialist equipment and was the stroke referee expertise at all swim meets attended.

Samuel Marsden, Scots College and Queen Margaret College students who came on mass to assist mainly with time keeping, life guard duties, videoing, marshalling, results and runner duties.  Thank you very much to all these students.

Thank you to the following teachers and their Principals for releasing the staff:

Alistair Hamilton (Scots) marshalling, Alice Domett-Doyle (Island Bay) Final check marshalling, Glen Sneddon (Race starting), Mark Leggett (St Mark's) announcing, Andrea Geluk and Jo Wilson (Johnsonville) marshalling, Jemma Rapson (Seatoun) Results, Jo Wheeler (Brooklyn) and Ray Marten (PSW) time recording.  Without all of the above people in these key roles the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet would not have been able to have been offered.

Special thank you and acknowledgement to the Lion Foundation who provided funding to cover the cost of the pool hire.

Special acknowledgement to the Lion Foundation and Todd Morten, Easy Swim.

The Lion Foundation have granted money to assist greatly with covering the cost of pool hire and specialist equipment needed for supporting 6 PSW Zone Swim Meets and the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet.

Todd Morten, has attended all 6 PSW Zone Swim meets and the PSW Inter ZOne Swim meet and provided his expertise with strokes and disqualifications.

Thank you to Swim Wellington for the use of their stopwatches for many of the Zone and PSW Inter Zone Swim meets.

2021 PSW Inter Zone Swimming Championships

Due to the overnight level 4 change experienced in this region on 20 August caused by the COVID Delta variant all remaining PSW Zones have elected to cancel their respective Zone Swim meets in 2021.

Unfortunately this means the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meet will not be able to be held as only the Western Zone schools were able to complete their Swim meet in 2021.

I know this news will be disappointing for ALL swimmers who have qualified to represent their zone from the schools  but there is NO feasible way to be able to hold any sporting event in an indoor public facility such as a swimming pool that will meet MOH Guidelines and social distancing requirements and within the permitted public gathering limits.

2020 PSW Inter Zone Swimming Championships

Due to COVID-19 pandemic and the shifting of ALL cross country events to term 3, a decision has been made to cancel ALL Zone and the PSW Inter Zone Swim Meets for 2020.

Unfortunately PSW does NOT have the ability or resources to support 12 Zone cross country and swimming events nor organise 2 PSW Inter Zone events and the Regional and Inter regional Cross Country events within a term.

PSW Inter Zone Swimming Championships

Thurs 14 September 2017

Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre.

Approximately 350 students from 47 Wellington primary schools competed at the PSW Inter Zone Swim Champs on Thursday.  The programme was a full one with 91 events and over 130 races to complete but with a couple of modifications made to the 2016 event i.e. (1) 3 timers per lane meant the need to identify finalists after each race was negated as ALL races became timed finals allowing the programme to flow more easily and at a rapid rate.  (2) Introduction of the Monster Relay race.  An exciting race as zones sent their fastest girl and boy 25m swimmer from years 4 - 8.

A huge thank you to all that assisted with the smooth running of this years event in particular to all the time keepers (majority from the Western Zone Schools), Georgina and Louise for writing down all times, Eastern Zone Schools - Aaron (Seatoun), Alistair and the Gap students (Scots College), Glen (Hataitai) and Daniel (Miramar North) for taking on all the marshalling duties, Clint Brandon (Brooklyn) - starter, Margaret Presland (KNS) and Robin Boldarin (EZ Schools Convenor) - results collation, and the false rope person.

Todd Morten (Easy Swim) Meeting referee and stroke identification, Aiden (Captial Swim Club) stroke identification.

This event could not place with out the assistance and professionalism displayed by all who helped and the funding assistance received from The Lion Foundation who have paid for ALL the pool hire including the 6 individual zone swim meets.

Schools will be sent information late term 2.   *Please NB In addition to the normal champs and non champs programme a Monster Relay event will be included into this years PSW Inter Zone Swimming Championship, so zones will need to send one male and female swimmer Year 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 students to swim one length of the pool.
